An often-neglected mineral plays an important role in over 300 biochemical bodily reactions, is crucial for the function of many enzymes, supports skeletal muscle and cardiac function, and helps prevent hypertension and diabetes. Yet on average, most Americans only get about ¾ of what they need of this critical mineral.Â
This mineral is magnesium. You want to be sure you’re getting enough of it. You especially want to be sure you’re taking enough if diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease are a concern.
I had an email form a friend a while back. Her boss had died a few months before, and it was interesting to observe her response to his death. She’s told stories about her boss over the years, and I had the impression that she respected him but disagreed with him fairly often and was annoyed by his quirks and foibles.Â
Her perspective shifted suddenly with his death. In his absence, she realized how much she had appreciated about him. She now values his contributions to their organization and to her personally.Â
You hear a lot more in the press these days about “super bugs†–the name they give to anti-biotic resistant bacteria. As usual, the popular media tell horrifying tales of the danger of these bacteria. Do we need to be afraid?
Short answer: no. Aware and respectful maybe, but not panicked.
There’s a lot to be said, but let’s begin with the fact that your immune system is much more important than any antibiotic in determining whether or not you recover from an infection. For that matter, with a healthy immune system and defenses, you never get sick in the first place.

Living a vital life really isn’t all that complicated. It’s natural for our bodies to be healthy and heal quickly when things go awry. Eat well. Move. Manage stress. Avoid poisons.
Virtually all disease results from lifestyle choices. Even a genetic predisposition to a disease doesn’t mean you’re doomed to experience the disease – environment plays a major role in whether or not a gene is expressed (you can read more about this in The Biology of Belief).
